Feb. 16 - 22, 2010 : Ruby Anniversary Week Celebration

Reaching Out by RCWF Chairman PDG Al Manus

In any organization, private or public, there are very critical activities that cannot be subordinated to anything else.  It should never be placed with other activity and should be clearly separate. These are what you call CONSCIENCE activities.  Only those few areas that are vital and central to an organizations success and survival should become conscience activities. These involves giving vision, setting standards and of auditing performance against these standards among others.  The objective and strategy of an organization determines what conscience activities are needed. This could be handled by a single individual or a group of individuals who are senior members of an organization who has a proven performance record.

The four (4) active PDGs of our club have taken the initiative of undertaking this role in the Club. In one brainstorming meeting, we decided to be pro-active starting this Rotary year and address some issues that are affecting our club and other clubs as well, especially our daughter clubs. Last year  most of the members of our club, especially the senior leaders had been so tied up assisting and supporting IPDG Rhia, especially addressing the most pressing concern during her administration. Understandably all of our 50 or so members were either active at the club level or at the district level. Given our standard for excellence, we focused all our resources (manpower and funds) to give it our best shot.  The result both at the club and district level, of course speaks for itself.

This RY, rather than slowing down, the PDGs of RC West is embarking on a series of activities along the concept of CONSCIENCE activities. Also our Manual of Procedures (MOP) which we are quoting below provides the term of reference for this initiative.

“Each district must organize an advisory council of past governors, composed of all past governors who are members of Rotary clubs within the district. Governors are urged to call an annual meeting of the council after the International Assembly to allow the governor-elect to inform the current and past governors of the issues debated and presented. This meeting should be held no more than one month after the International Assembly.

The authority and responsibility of the governor shall in no way be impaired or impeded by the advice or actions of the past governors (RCP 19.080.2)

Governors are urged to consider the council’s assistance in extension efforts, informing incoming governors, promoting the convention, providing Rotary information, and supporting weaker clubs, serving when invited by the club president and the governor as ad hoc members of the club board of directors. (RCP 19.080.1)

Taking a cue from this TOR, the active PDGs while involved at the district level, is also concerned at what is needed  in our club and those close to us- thus this initiative.

PDG Al Manus

During the activity planning of the club, one of the activities or thrust that was brought up is for our club to reach out to the other clubs, starting with our daughter clubs. The objective of course is to consciously develop a non-threatening image of our club to the other clubs in our zones and eventually to the whole district. We cannot blame the other clubs for this kind of thinking since we already have produced 7 PDGs (more are on deck). We can always say that we earned it but just the same, we need to do something about it.

In one of the huddles we had with the PDGs, we thought that the PDGs of our club can anchor this project, considering that somehow, we have time to do this and also given the stature of the position.

I would like to propose the following specific projects or activities-

1.  Initiate a meeting with the presidents of our five daughter clubs (RC Carmen Valley, Center Point, Far East,  Uptown and out grand daughter club RC Carmen Valley- west). As agreed, we will do this on Tuesday 5PM at VIP. PDG Rhia will take care of inviting the presidents.

2.  During the meeting we can propose the following-

2.1  During the forthcoming Rotary Institute Manila 2009 on Nov. 27, 2009, the PDGs attending will try to look for a matching club for our daughter clubs.

2.2  Our club or our foundation will spearhead in accepting the offer of Cong. Rufus Rodriguez to provide counterpart funding for a GK village (good for 10 units). If the six RCs will agree I can provide the initial funding for P75K either thru our club or thru our foundation. PP Ric Rotorus committed for RC Center Point one unit. With this two units, Cong. Rufus, will match it with two units, so during this Rotary year, 4 units can be constructed and finished before our 40th anniversary. This can be included as one of our banner projects in cooperation with our daughter clubs.

2.3 Regular fellowship meetings with our daughter clubs.

2.4 Other activities, we can agree on.

These are just ideas as a starting discussion points during our meeting with the presidents of our daughter clubs.

I am attaching a file re the proposed site of the Rotary GK village, for your info.
